Firewood FAQ's

PRODUCT AND WOOD TYPES

Q: What types of firewood do you sell?

A: We supply a range of seasoned, ready-to-burn firewood tailored to your heating needs. Our options include Standard Hot Mix, Premium Hot Mix, Hardwood Mix, and Softwood Mix.

Q: What is the difference between Standard Hot Mix and Premium Hot Mix?

A: It comes down to the wood blend and burn time:

Standard Hot Mix: A balanced blend of 1/3 hardwood and 2/3 softwood. It lights easily and  produces steady heat, making it a fantastic everyday option.

Premium Hot Mix: A heavier 50/50 blend of hardwood and softwood. This gives you a much longer, hotter burn with fewer top-ups - ideal for overnight heating or colder winter snaps.

Q: Is your firewood seasoned and ready to burn?

A: Yes! All of our ready‑to‑burn firewood is tested to ensure it’s dry and suitable for use. Firewood is generally considered dry when it’s below 25% moisture, and we aim for around 20% or less to deliver the best burn quality

Planning ahead? We also offer unseasoned (green) firewood at a discounted rate if you’d like to buy early and season it yourself for next winter.

Q: How much wood is in your 50L bags?

A: Our 50L bags use a standard 25kg stock-feed bag size (50cm wide × 90cm high). Because we secure them with a heavy-duty cable tie, we lose a tiny bit of space at the very top. Depending on the log sizes, you can expect between 10 to 15 pieces of quality firewood per bag.

Q: Why does the firewood sometimes vary in size?

A: Our processor cuts every piece to a standard 280 mm length. The variation you see comes from log diameter —- larger logs split into bigger pieces, smaller logs split into thinner ones. This is normal for any processed firewood.

We also run oversized logs through a manual processing system, which produces larger, square‑cut blocks. These are great for longer, hotter burns, but they naturally add more size variation to some loads.

Q: Can I request a custom cut or size for my firewood?
A: Yes, custom sizing can be arranged! We can cater to unique heating needs by processing smaller cuts or supplying larger, chunkier pieces from our separately processed wood stock.

Because custom orders require extra machine handling and sorting time, they incur an additional fee of between $10 and $40 per cubic metre, depending on your request. Please contact us directly before placing your order to discuss what you need.

Q: Why is hardwood more expensive than softwood?

A: Hardwood trees take significantly longer to grow and require a much longer seasoning process. Because the wood is so dense, it burns hotter and lasts much longer, offering superior heat value.

DELIVERY AND PICKUPS

Q: Do you deliver firewood?

A: Yes, we deliver right across Hamilton and the wider Waikato region.

  • Free Delivery: Available within our Hamilton map zone for all orders of 3m³ (3 cube) or more.

  • Smaller or Outside Orders: Deliveries under 3m³ or those outside the Hamilton zone incur a delivery fee starting from $25, depending on your location.

You can check your exact area on our Delivery Map here

Q: Why does my woodpile look smaller after I stack it? (Thrown vs. Stacked volume)

A: In line with standard New Zealand trade regulations, all bulk firewood is sold as a "thrown measure" (or loose volume). This means the wood is measured exactly as it lands when loosely tipped into our MBIE-certified truck bins.

When you neatly hand-stack the logs in your wood shed, you eliminate the natural air pockets between the pieces. Because the logs are now packed tightly together, the physical pile will always occupy less total space.

As a general rule of thumb, “stacking wood reduces its volume by about a third, so 3m³ of thrown wood is roughly equivalent to 2m³ of stacked.” Rest assured, you are receiving the exact, legally compliant volume of wood you paid for, it just takes up less room once it's organized!

Q: How soon can you deliver my order?

A: Delivery times vary depending on seasonal demand and the weather. During peak autumn and winter, our calendar fills up incredibly fast. We always recommend ordering early to secure your preferred delivery window before the cold weather hits.

Q: Can I choose a specific delivery time?

A: We will allocate a delivery window for your scheduled day. To save you from waiting around, our driver will text or call you roughly 30 minutes before arrival so you know exactly when to expect us.

Q: Do you deliver to rural properties?

A: We certainly do! We can deliver to most rural Waikato properties as long as our truck can safely access the driveway and gates. If your access is tight, steep, or tricky, just text us a quick photo of the entrance ahead of time.

Q: What if I am not home when the delivery arrives?

A: No problem at all. When placing your order, simply leave clear instructions on where you would like the wood tipped. Our driver will do their best to place it exactly where requested.

Q: Do you offer a firewood stacking service?

A: No, we do not currently offer a hand-stacking service. Our truck will tip the load onto your property in a spot that is safe and easily accessible for the vehicle.

Q: Can I pick up my firewood instead?

A: Yes, yard pickups are available by strict arrangement only once your order is confirmed. Please contact us to place your order and book a collection time slot.

A: Yes, we are an approved WINZ supplier. We can quickly generate official quotes to help you secure emergency housing or heating support.

Q: How much firewood do I need to get through winter?

A: Most households in the Waikato region use between 3m³ and 6m³ of wood per winter. Your actual usage will depend on the size of your home, how well it is insulated, the efficiency of your log burner, and how many hours a day you run your fire.

FIREWOOD USAGE & STORAGE

Q: How should I store my firewood?

A: To keep your wood in prime burning condition, store it:

  • Off the wet ground (on pallets or timber runners).

  • Under cover (in a woodshed or under a secure tarp).

  • With good airflow on all sides to prevent moisture trap.

  • Away from damp earth or unventilated walls.

Q: Can I burn your wood in an open fire or a pizza oven?

A: Yes, absolutely. Our wood is great for both. For pizza ovens and long overnight burns in an open fireplace, our dense hardwoods are the top choice. Our softwoods are fantastic for quick heat or getting your fire started.
