Hardwood vs. Softwood: Which Firewood Is Right for Your Fireplace?

There is nothing quite like the crackle of a real wood fire when the temperature drops. But if you’ve ever struggled to get a fire lit, or noticed your wood burning away to ash in the blink of an eye, you might not be using the right mix.

When it comes to firewood, all logs are split into two major categories: hardwoods and softwoods. Understanding the difference between them, and knowing how to combine them, is the secret to the perfect, hassle-free fire.

🌲 The Quick Starters: Softwoods

       Featuring: Pine, Macrocarpa, & Poplar

"Softwood" doesn’t mean the wood is spongy or soft to the touch. It simply means it comes from evergreen conifer or fast-growing trees. In our yard, our Softwood Mix is primarily made of Pine, rounded out with Macrocarpa and Poplar.

  • How they burn: Softwoods are less dense. They ignite incredibly quickly and produce large, vibrant flames right away.

  • Best used for: Starting your fire! Because they catch easily, softwoods are perfect for kindling and getting the initial blaze hot enough to ignite heavier logs. They are also great for a quick, roaring fire on a cool evening.

  • The Trade-off: They burn hot and fast. If you burn only softwood, you will find yourself reloading the fireplace much more frequently.

🌳 The Long Burners: Hardwoods

        Featuring: Gum & Oak

Hardwoods come from slow-growing deciduous trees. They are incredibly dense, heavy, and packed full of potential heat energy. In our region, Gum is the king of hardwoods, alongside a bit of classic Oak.

  • How they burn: Hardwoods take longer to catch fire, but once they get going, they are unstoppable. They burn slowly and steadily, radiating an immense amount of heat into the room for hours.

  • Best used for: Overnight warmth and sustained home heating. Hardwoods leave behind a thick bed of glowing, red-hot coals that radiate heat long after the active flames die down.

  • The Trade-off: They require an established, hot fire base to start burning. If you try to light a thick log of pure Gum with just a match and a piece of newspaper, you are going to have a frustrating night.

📊 Quick Reference: Our Firewood Lineup at a Glance

You don't actually have to choose just one or the other. In fact, the best fires use a strategic blend of both. Use this table to find your perfect mix based on your heating goals:

2/3 Softwood Blend

Premium Hotmix

1/2 Softwood

The ultimate crowd-pleaser. Easy to light, long-lasting, and high heat output.

💡 Pro-Tip for the Perfect Fire:

Never overload a cold fireplace with hardwood right away. Start your fire using smaller pieces of our Softwood Mix to build up a high-temperature base. Once you have a glowing bed of red embers, toss on your Gum or Oak. The softwood provides the flame, and the hardwood provides the longevity!
